The title, "more beautiful was yesterday", has both a nostalgic and hopeful ring to it. It makes you curious and it is a glance into the future.

A very special atmosphere pervades the pictures by Katharina Schnitzler; pictures you want to stay in front of for a long time. They seem to awaken something in us. Together with the rich colour spaces and a lush materiality, the floral ornamentation stands for the human longing for beauty (a beautiful life). In order to realise this, we are engaged in understanding the care of our own "little gardens" as the centre of our own lives. This human approach is understandable and yet it does not protect us from falling into cyclones, political extremes, uncertainties and loneliness. Against this background, the artist invites us, by means of attentive observation, to view beauty as a potential bridge between people, continents and ideologies.

And then, a jump back. The drawings, "Women as Tarts" (‘Frau als Törtchen’) remind us of the world inhabited by women before the French Revolution - the bodice is tight-fitting, the waist is laced up and, by means of the abundant use of false hair pieces, imaginative and protruding hairstyles were attached to the ladies of the Biedermeier era. Tarts?!

He comes and eats them all up, leaving just a heap. A quick run-through - do we need emancipation today? We look around us and are amazed.

Then, like Catherine Schnitzler, one thought comes to mind -  "I want to get away from here…" And she says that a jump from the window or into the canvas helps here. A jump into the ESCAPE VEHICLE (series of images, layering on canvas). These works are to be seen in contrast to her other series - “1000 Africans, No Return” (‘1000 Afrikaner, No Return’). As a mirror to her questions on current social incidents.

“I encountered my first consciously perceived "escape vehicle" at the documenta exhibition of contemporary art in Kassel. Andrea Zittel had built small, perfect escape vehicles. A lot of people need them again today. It is my intention to perceive the image in its origins. I escape from reality into the pictorial reality."

She does not illustrate her intense playing with patterns, textures and texts, which we meet in all the series of works, with a wistful look backwards, but rather evokes a specific aura from a sovereign perspective; and this at the same time full of allusions and hope.
